MetroNet offers personal firwalling to ADSL users - Posted by: Andrew
MetroNet today announces the introduction of a new feature giving our
customers an easy way to apply firewalling to their ADSL connections, at no
extra charge.
Given the recent spate of virus attacks that caused widespread problems for
both customers and service providers alike, we've taken a pro-active step to
provide our customers with an added layer of protection for their ADSL
connections and a better chance to not get caught out during the next major
virus wave!
Like so many ISPs, MetroNet staff have had their work cut out assisting
customers affected by Sobig, Blaster and Welchia to patch and protect their
computers. We are determined to make it easier for both customers and
ourselves to minimise the fallout from future attacks and where possible
empower them to be able to take preventative measures.
This unique system gives users the peace of mind of a facility that, at the
click of a button, allows them to lock out unwanted connections to their
computers in seconds, whenever they need. What's more becuase it works at the
network rather than local level it offers customers, particularly without
local firwalling in place, a line of defence that most Broadband providers do
not (or will not) provide.
"Indeed, it's not until you have ADSL that you realise just how open you can
be to all kinds of attempted exploits and attacks. The new personal
firewalling facility provides our customers an easy and quick way to add a
layer of protection to complement the local security measures they should be
implementing locally." Robert Clark, Network Manager, MetroNet.

Launch of Extended Reach - Posted by: Andrew
BT Wholesale are pleased to confirm that following a successful pilot they
will be increasing the planning rules for their 500kbps rate adaptive products
from 55db to 60db line loss from the 24th September 2003. This will allow more
line tests to receive ‘green’ results from line qualification. The reach of
broadband in enabled exchange areas would therefore be extended to homes
within approximately 6km line length of the exchange, subject to line test.
This move, extending the previous limit of approximately 5.5km line length,
increases the coverage within broadband enabled areas from approximately 94
per cent to approximately 97 per cent equating to an additional 600,000 homes
across the UK.
The BT Wholesale products affected are: -
BT IPStream 500
BT IPStream S 500
BT IPStream Home 500
BT IPStream Office 500
BT DataStream Home 500
BT DataStream Office 500
There will be no changes to the prices or existing ordering, provisioning or
repair processes for these products. The ‘on line’ qualification processes
will remain the same, except that a greater proportion of lines will be
accepted.
The system changes necessary to introduce these new line limits will be
completed by 12 noon on the 24th September. Orders placed before this time
will not be subject to the new line limits and may be rejected if the line
loss exceeds 55dB.
Highway/ISDN2 Conversion
Conversions from Highway/ISDN2 will be accepted from 12 noon on the 24th

a graphical user interface, that includes firewall and network access control
applications. This also allows full parental control of Internet accessibility
for each individual PC on a network by controlling how and when children can
surf as well as the data that they can access.
BT is selling a package designed to support a 2 PC networking solution which
contains the 1200 modem/router and a BT Home Network PC adaptor which retails
at £199. This allows two PC’s to be networked the first via a USB port and the
